THE SUMMER OF THE FESTIVAL

2013 is shaping up to be the summer of the festival, as more and more artists like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tom Petty, and Mumford and Sons have decided to tour using the festival circuit, rather than traditional self guided/promoted tours this summer. In addition to several major artists playing at festivals, many festivals like Coachella, The Peach Music fest, and Ultra Music Festival have added an extra weekend or an extra day here and there to allow for more artists to join. Below is a complete rundown of the major festivals coming this summer, as well as links to buy tickets for each one. Another aspect that has added spice to the festivals, is the rise in popularity of techno/electronic music, and mainstay classic rock artists mingling and matching with newer artists. Bonnaroo, is even showcasing a popular Electronic music artist called Pretty Lights. Paul McCartney is playing Bonnaroo, Tom Petty and Red Hot Chili Peppers are playing with newer artists at the Firefly fest, in Delaware, The Stone Roses are re-uniting at the Coachella music festival, Elvis Costello and the Imposters are making the journey out to The Gorge to play with Mumford and Sons, and, also The Cure are rumored to play at Lollapalooza in Chicago. Many festivals include VIP seats, that include better sight lines, amenities such as private showers, art displays, eclectic food offerings, and sometimes even back massages. Obviously it’s not just all about the music anymore, but about a full audio/visual/visceral experience! Woodstock may not be alive, but several new versions have popped up, in the year of the festival, 2013!

I had a chance yesterday to watch The new Eagles documentary on Showtime. The doc chronicles the rise, the breakup, and the eventual reunion of the iconic band over the last 40+ years they’ve been in existence. I’ve always liked The Eagles, and it was cool to see all the different players that made up the band, stories of Joe Walsh trashing hotel rooms, and why different members left etc.. Some of the best parts of the doc though are the explanations and history of how they wrote or came about developing some of their best songs. Hotel California’s guitar riff was originally written by Don Felder, with the lyrics added later by Don Henley and Glenn Frey, and the ending was embellished by Joe Walsh playing off Felder. The song, “Life in the Fastlane”, was originally developed by Joe Walsh doing a warm up strum on his guitar, which led to the band wanting to create a song based upon the riff. The song, “Seven Bridges road”, inspired the Eagles producer Glyn Johns to direct the band into songs that showcased their vocal harmony. The other interesting aspect of The Eagles is that most of the tension in the band wasn’t solely because of personal relationships, but mostly about what direction each of the band members wanted to go with the music…Bernie Leadon, who was one of The Eagles original lead guitar players wanted the band to stay with their country roots, and didn’t want them to become a full-tilt rock band. This disagreement caused a lot of problems with the band and eventually led to Leadon leaving The Eagles for good. Randy Meisner was unsure of his singing ability, even though he could hit the really high notes on Take it To The Limit, his most popular song with the band. He also had 3 children, which put a ton of stress on him with all of the Eagles touring etc…Eventually, Meisner left the band and hasn’t come back even in their reunion incarnation. Don Felder and Joe Walsh fought with Glenn Frey and Don Henley over who would sing in certain songs, or what songs would get put on the albums in the late 70′s and the band just got burned out with all the fighting, touring and of course drugs. They broke up right before the 1980′s, only to finally return with the live album “Hell Freezes over” in the mid 90′s. Overall The Eagles documentary is definitely worth watching, it gives a really honest account of the band, I give it 4 out of 5 stars and if you are lucky enough to have Showtime definitely check it out on demand or on a re-airing if you can. Also, If you ever get a chance to see the band live, do it; The Eagles are one of the best classic rock touring acts that are still around. Joe Walsh, Don Henley and Glenn Frey also perform solo here and there, and a few years back Don Henley did a tour with Stevie Nicks. Comments welcome about the doc or the band!

Every day I load up the computer at Work here at ABC, I find myself coming back to Pandora internet radio each time. I think the reason I do, is because it’s great and simple way to find out about new music, and the other reason is to hear the music I already like without having to fiddle with a playlist, which would interrupt me while I work. Pandora is a simple music service that asks you to create an account, and then after that enter a few artists you like using an easy to use web interface. After you enter some music you like, Pandora will then create a station that plays music/songs similar or at least slightly similar to the artist you already like….i.e. if you select a few dance artists like Beyonce or Pink!, expect to hear more upbeat R&B and dance music like Bruno Mars or maybe even something close like Fun. . After hearing a few songs you may already know, here’s where the fun part comes in (no pun intended); you then may hear a few new songs by lesser known artists, and then if you’re like me, you’ll then want to see these artists live! Another company that offers a similar type service is Spotify, which first started in London and is very popular in the United States too…I’ve yet to really explore Spotify, but from what I hear from friends and business associates, it’s very similar. One of my favorite stations is Little Feat radio (somewhat popular 70′s artist)…On this station, they tend to play a lot of southern rock, mixed in with Dire Straits, Eric Clapton, Robert Palmer, and of course Little Feat themselves…..Another station i listen to a lot is a station I made myself called “New Indie Rock”, where I’ve added tons of new rock/folk artists like The Lumineers, Fleet Foxes, Mumford and Sons, and Local Natives…and some not so new bands like “The Strokes“, Phoenix, and “The Postal Service“, which incidentally have reunited for a tour this Summer. Anyway you slice it, it’s a great service if you aren’t too distracted by music at your job or just want to have fun at home! Comments welcome below on your favorite music services or “personal stations” you get into!
