Barbra Streisand is one of the most legendary singers of our time with over
50 gold, 30 platinum and 13 multi-platinum albums.
She is also the only artist to have received an Oscar, Tony, Emmy Grammy, Golden
Globe, Cable Ace and Peabody Award, as well as the American Film Institute's
Life Achievement Award.
Her music and acting is world renown and she is bringing her great talent to
concert arenas across America in the Fall of 2006.
In 1962, Barbra Streisand appeared on Broadway in her first but critically
acclaimed role in "I Can Get It for You Wholesale" in 1962, and she quickly
signed her first record deal
with Columbia Records in that same year. Her first record, The Barbra Streisand Album,
won 2 Grammy Awards in 1963.
Streisand's popularity soared and her first 3 records were all at the top of
Billboard's Top Ten pop albums. Barbra would not put acting on hold however, as she starred in the movie Funny
Girl in 1964. The movie was based on the life of Fanny Brice and begin opening
eyes of her acting as well as musical talents. Streisand would then star in several TV specials including 1965's My Name Is
Barbra, which was critically acclaimed and drew more attention to her
great acting as well as singing skills. Some of Barbara's records in the 1960's
were The Second Barbra Streisand Album, The Third Album, and My Name Is Barbra.
These albums featured Barbra's unique and beautiful singing voice performing
nightclub and theatre standards and they also did very well on the pop charts.
The late 60's and 70's brought change to her music styling, as she would produce
new versions of current songs.
Streisand's next big hit record came with the pop laden Stoney End in 1971, with
the title track becoming the biggest hit off the record. Streisand was successful in the 70's and outsold every other female recording
artist of the time. Her #1 1970's records included the pop songs, "The Way
We Were", "Evergreen", "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)" and "Woman In Love". She was third in record sales
only below rock immortals, Elvis and the Beatles. But
her biggest success would be the 1980
album, Guilty, featuring Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees. After venturing into pop music Barbra came out with a theatrical laden album
named appropriately, "The Broadway Album". The album was able to crossover and
still hit the top of the billboard charts, even though it contained Broadway
tunes rather than pop numbers.
The Album included reworked recordings written by Stephen Sondheim and was
nominated as Album of the Year in 1985. Not only that but she Streisand won her
8th Grammy as best Female Vocalist.
After amounting a slew of number 1 records and hits, Streisand released a
greatest hits box set in 1991 called "Just For the Record". The box set featured
70 songs spanning her almost 30 year old singing career from the early 1960's to
91'.
