For 30 years, Petty and the Heartbreakers have been producing good, old fashion
rock and roll. It all started in 1976 with their debut release, the self-titled
“Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.” Growing up in Gainesville, Fla., Petty, like
many musicians in the late sixties and early seventies, got his inspiration from
the King himself, Elvis Presley. Petty jammed with several bands, including The
Sundowners and The Epics, before hooking up with drummer Randall Marsh, Mike
Campbell and Benmont Tench. Those four musicians eventually became Tom Petty and
the Heartbreakers. Their first release included the hit “Breakdown,” which, when
re-released in 1977, became a Top 40 hit and made the band instant sensations,
especially across the pond in England.
Eighteen albums later, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are American rock icons.
Their classic sound has been known to have entire stadiums singing in unison.
