2005 Indianapolis 500 tickets probably generated more interest than any ticket
in the 89 years of the Indy 500. There was Tony Kanaan waltzing in and capturing
the pole position to set himself up as the favorite again. The return of Jeff
Ward and Jimmy Kite was highly anticipated. And then there was rookie Danica
Patrick, who made a mark for herself at Motegi, stirring the pot with the
possibility of being the first female driver at the Indianapolis 500 to capture

Dan Wheldon at bay for a few laps while conserving fuel. Her move to the front

pass, and with only 10 laps left in the race Patrick was in good position to
make Indy 500 history again. At lap 194 however, Wheldon managed to zoom ahead
and hang on to the top spot, giving the Andretti team a long overdue win, and
becoming the first British driver to win the 500 since 1966. Patrick, in her
first start at the Indianapolis 500, managed to finish in fourth place and
solidify her reputation as an aggressive competent driver able to compete with
the men on equal footing.
