Some may say that Kansas City is a football town, but fans buying Royals tickets may beg to differ. Home of the Negro League Museum, KC is rich in baseball history, and the Royals are a big part of that history. Building team worthy of the baseball tradition Kansas City represents, much less one that can compete in the competitive American League Central which includes the World Series Champion Chicago White Sox is no easy task, but as the team prepares to renovate Kaufman Stadium, they are also preparing to renovate the team. New manager Buddy Bell has experience with coaching underachieving teams as he has already been at the helm of the Detroit Tigers and the Colorado Rockies. Now in Kansas City, Bell will take over a team that has not seen a winning season in two years, but looks to re-establish themselves as a competitive team. The center piece of the Royals is once again all-star first baseman Mike Sweeney. Sweeney may however see more time as a designated hitter as one of the new players to join the team is defensively minded first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz. Mientkiewicz along with veteran second baseman Mark Grudzielanek and right fielder Reggie Sanders will be joining the team. Returning to the Royals will be shortstop Angel Berroa, center fielder David DeJesus, left fielder Emil Brown, and young third baseman Mark Teahen. Veteran Catcher Paul Bako was brought to the team to help set an example for John Buck, performing a role similar to the one he was charged with last year in Los Angeles tutoring young catcher Dioner Navarro. The Royals have many options for the starting rotation, as Scott Elarton, Mark Redman, and Joe Mays were all brought in to join the rotation, while Zack Greinke, Runelvys Hernandez, Jeremy Affeldt, will most likely compete for the other two spots. Mike MacDougal will most likely return to his role as closer, though the team toyed with the idea of giving talented youngsters Andrew Sisco and Ambiorix Burgos a shot at the tail end of the relief core. The Royals look to return to the winning direction they were headed in just a few short years ago. Combining young talent with veteran leadership may prove to be a successful recipe to do just that. Royals tickets will offer more this year than in the past as Kansas City has taken steps toward building its future. The turnaround is right around the corner as there is talent and experience on this team, and improvement is sure to come.
