While veteran center fielder Bernie Williams remains with the team to finish out his career as a role player, the starting job as well as the leadoff spot will go to new teammate and former rival, Johnny Damon. Damon’s acquisition was a coup, as his signing with the Yankees came as a surprise considering he had been a mainstay with division rivals, the Boston Red Sox. In addition to Johnson and Mussina, there will be five pitchers vying for three spots as Shawn Chacon, Chien-Ming Wang, Carl Pavano, Jaret Wright and Aaron Small all qualify and will be competing to make the starting rotation.
