The New York Yankees are the cream of the crop and the perennial team to beat in
the American League. Fans will once again be buying Yankees tickets expecting to
see a field full of all-stars as they make yet another run at their ultimate
goal, the World Series. Team manager Joe Torre once again leads his team as they
are typically reloaded as they head into Spring Training.
With the most comprehensive history in baseball, the Yankees have won 26 World
Championships and 39 American League pennants. Some of the greatest players of
all time have played on the Yankees, including Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, and
Mickey Mantle. Things have not changed much in the Bronx as far as the Yankees
tradition of winning is concerned, as they have once again put together a strong
team.
Leading the charge once again is team captain Derek Jeter. In the 10 years since
Jeter’s arrival in New York, the Yankees have won 6 American League pennants and
4 World Series. Other Yankee mainstays include Mario Rivera, one of the best
closers in baseball, and Jorge Posada, a rare offensively productive catcher.
With a two hundred million dollar payroll, the Yankees have no shortage of
all-stars. Alex Rodriguez, Gary Sheffield, Jason Giambi, Hideki Matsui, Mike
Mussina, and Randy Johnson have all represented their teams in the
All Star game. While veteran center fielder Bernie Williams remains with the
team to finish out his career as a role player, the starting job as well as the
leadoff spot will go to new teammate and former rival, Johnny Damon. Damon’s
acquisition was a coup, as his signing with the Yankees came as a surprise
considering he had been a mainstay with division rivals, the
Boston Red Sox. Other free agent signings, Kyle Farnsworth and Octavio Dotel
will join Rivera and Tanyon Sturtze to bolster the Yankees bullpen, making for
an intimidating group backing up a starting staff of pitchers with many options.
In addition to Johnson and Mussina, there will be five pitchers vying for three
spots as Shawn Chacon, Chien-Ming Wang, Carl Pavano, Jaret Wright and Aaron
Small all qualify and will be competing to make the starting rotation.
Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, known for being active with team operations
as well as with his checkbook, is expecting nothing less than another post
season run at the World Series. New York Yankees tickets will be in demand as
the Bronx Bombers look to make good on those expectations, and earn themselves
another championship.
