| The curse of the Bambino, Jorge Posada's
game winning homer, Bucky Dent, the 2004 Boston Red Sox World Series
run....One of the best rivalries in sports is the New York Yankees and
Boston Red Sox. Over the years the teams have met almost 2000
times and the Yankees have the lead in the all tme series with a record
of 1,060-879 (.547) through the 2005 MLB season.
The Curse of the Bambino - Yankees Red Sox myth or fact ?
In 1918 the Boston Red Sox won their 5th World Series, the most by
any baseball team at that time.
One of the best players on those Red Sox world series teams was George
Herman Ruth or Babe Ruth, yes he was a good pitcher at the time!
In 1920, however, The Red Sox had been under financial stress and had
regularly sold players to the New York Yankees.
However, none as big as the Bambino (Ruth). In 1920, Red Sox owner Harry
Frazee did the unthinkable, he sold Babe Ruth's contract to Colonel
Jacob Ruppert's New York Yankees for $100,000 (plus a loan
collateralized by Fenway Park).
Since then, the Yankees, who had never won a World Championship before
acquiring Ruth have won 26 World Series championships and become one of
the best franchises in the history of baseball, if not the history of
all professional sports.
Not only that but the New York Yankees have done this at the expense of
the Red Sox on several occasions, either by beating them out in their
regular season games to capture regular season AL East titles or in the
playoffs, like the Bucky Dent homerun example below
The Boston Red Sox had appeared in only 4 World Series since 1918,
losing each one in game seven. Many consider Boston's performance after
the departure of Babe Ruth to be attributable to "The Curse of the
Bambino." Of course in 2004, the curse was reversed....find out now

Bucky Dent's game winning homerun for N.Y.
Dent's home run will send shivers down the spine of any Red Sox fan,
and in most cases Sox fans will say,
Bucky F*** Dent. Whereas Yankees fans will remember the day with glee on
October 2nd, 1978.
The Yankees and Red Sox would meet at Fenway Park before a sold out
crowd of 32,925.
The Yankees were down to the Sox in the AL East by 14 games on July 19.
After Billy Martin was fired as manager, Bob Lemon led the team to a
52-21 record. Losing 14 of 17 in September, the RedSox made a
late-season run winning their last eight games, catching the N.Y.
Yankees on the last day of the season. New York's best pitcher at the
time, Ron Guidry gave up two runs to Boston through six - a home run to
Carl Yastrzemski and a Jim Rice RBI single. Mike Torrez, came in to
pitch in the 7th, ironically a former Yankee, was the Boston pitcher.
Chris Chambliss singled. Roy White singled. That's how the top of the
seventh began for the Yankees. All was just foreshadowing for Earl
Russell "Bucky" Dent out of Savannah, Georgia. Dent was a fine defensive
shortstop but not much of an offensive threat, his batting average was
.243 for the season. And even worse, for the last 20 games he had batted
only .140. But the Yanks were out of infield replacements. Regular
second baseman Willie Randolph was injured. Fred Stanley, the only other
available mid-infielder, was slotted to come in and replace Brian Doyle,
who had been hit for earlier in the inning. Dent stepped in. Just hoping
to make contact, the 5'-9" Yankee peered out at Torrez, the 6'-5" Red
Sox pitcher. The two were locked in, locked up. Dent fouled the second
pitch off his foot. The count was one and one. There was a brief delay
as the Yankees trainer tended to Dent. Mickey Rivers, the
on-deck-batter, pointed out that there was a crack in the handsome
infielder's bat. Dent borrowed a bat from Rivers. All set, Dent swung at
the next pitch; the ball cleared the infield heading out to the left
field wall. The wind and destiny moved the ball higher to its date with
the Green Monster. "Deep to left!" Bill White, Yankees broadcaster
shouted, "Yastrzemski will not get it!" Yaz backed up. He had been in
this position before. But he knew it was hopeless. The ball sailed into
the 23-foot net above the Green Monster, the 37-foot wall in left field.
Three run home run! White, Chambliss and the entire Yankee bench were
there waiting at home plate. It was all Bucky Dent that October day. "I
was so damn shocked," Torrez said. "I thought maybe it was going to be
off the wall. Damn, I did not think it was going to go out." Not many
remember that the Red Sox still had a chance in the bottom of the ninth.
But Goose Gossage got Carl Yastrzemski to pop out with 2 on and 2 out.
Not many remember that the victory in that game was earned by Ron
Guidry, moving his record to 25-3. "I had a dream as a kid," the player
who was born Russell Earl O'Dey said. "I dreamed some day I would hit a
home run to win something." Something Red Sox fans won't forget
either, get Red Sox Yankees tickets now.
Boston Red Sox finally get revenge against the NY Yankees....
However during the 2004 season the Red Sox, faced with a 3-0 deficit
against New York in a pivotal game four brought little known and speedy
utility man Dave Roberts in to steal 2nd base and the Red Sox were able
to score him with a base hit from Dave Muller, sending the game to extra
innings. In extra innings, one of the Sox's best players, David Ortiz
sent one out of Fenway Park and ultimately sparked a much needed fire in
the hearts of the Boston Red Sox team and fans. The Red Sox went on to
win the next 3 games of the series, capping off an improbable 4 game
comeback. A feat that had never been accomplished before in the
ALCS (American League Championship Series). The Sox then went on
to win easily in the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals and
win their first World Series since the curse started in 1918.
Some Red Sox fans will argue now that the curse was nothing but a myth
perpetuated by loyal Yankees fans....who knows, but it's definitely over
with Boston Red Sox World series victory. Boston Red Sox World Series
tickets may be available again soon, or will it be New York Yankees
World Series tickets available before then? Only time and the swing of
the bat will tell...... |
