Who needs a defense?  It's the points that sell Dallas Mavericks tickets! Owner Mark Cuban has assembled a team of offensive stars that light up scoreboards.  Players such as Jason Terry, Jerry Stackhouse, and Keith Van Horn are continually up and down the floor and sinking baskets.  And then there's the big power forward Dirk Nowitzki.  Good luck trying to stop the Mavericks.  They may not have much of a defense, but they are absolutely explosive when they get the ball.  And rumor has it that new addition Doug Christie just might bring a little defense to Dallas this year.  Mavericks ticket holders are in for a wild ride in the Southwest!
 
A high-scoring offense has always been the key to the Dallas Mavericks. In the mid to late-1980s Brad Davis, Rolando Blackmon, Derek Harper, and Mark Aguirre took the team to the playoffs consistently on their offensive rather than defensive skills.  Despite high scoring games in the 1988 season, the Mavericks would be knocked out of the playoffs by Magic Johnson and the Lakers on their way to their second consecutive championship.
 
The additions of Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki in 1998 helped give final shape to the high-powered offense by which the Mavericks are known.  With the help of Michael Finley, Nash and Nowitizki lit up the court and made the Mavericks into the NBA standard for explosive offenses.  In 2001, the trio of Nash, Finley and Nowitzki gave Mavericks fans their first chance to buy playoff tickets in eleven years.
 
Now, the Mavericks are facing challenges again.  Steve Nash left Dallas in 2004 and was named league MVP playing for the Phoenix Suns. Michael Finley was waived in the offseason under the luxury-tax rule.  Mavericks fans don't fear: they know that Doug Christie, Jerry Stackhouse, and Marquis Daniels are there to fill the void.  They know that head coach Avery Johnson has made defense part of the team's approach since taking over.  Both Nowitzki and Stackhouse showed improvement on the defensive side of the ball since Johnson's arrival. The Mavs fans know that the San Antonio Spurs are the hot team in the Southwest right now.  But should they stumble, should they be off their game just a little, Dallas ticket holders know that the Mavericks will be there ready and waiting to take over as the kings of the Southwest.
