Memphis Grizzlies ticket holders know that they are in for a special treat this year in the FedEx Forum. Jerry West rid the team of Bonzi Wells and Jason Williams in favor of Damon Stoudamire, Eddie Jones and Bobby Jackson in the hopes of developing some better chemistry among his players. Wells and Williams polluted the team’s chemistry and the play of Pau Gasol and Mike Miller suffered because of it. West and head coach Mike Fratello believe that the new veterans’ presence will stabilize the locker room. The Grizzlies definitely have a shot at a return trip to the NBA Playoffs this year, if they can lock down that magical chemistry that’s so necessary to succeed in the NBA.
The Grizzlies began their history in Vancouver in 1995 and were the first team to play in Canada since 1947, when the Huskies played in Toronto. The Grizzlies, along with the Toronto Raptors, were seen as a sign of the NBA’s explosive growth at the time, but Grizzlies tickets never really caught on, and in 2001 the team moved to Memphis, a city hungry for some NBA action.
After the move, Jerry West, already having proven himself by rebuilding the Lakers, was hired as President of Basketball Operations. He immediately brought in Gasol and Shane Battier, and both rookies made their presence known on the court under the tutelage of the legendary NBA coach Hubie Brown.
Brown would win the Coach of the Year award in the 2003-04 season, but his age and health caught up with him and he resigned, leaving Grizzlies fans somewhat despondent. West brought in Mike Fratello as the Grizzlies’ next head coach, and Grizzlies ticket holders’ fears were put to bed when the team made the NBA Playoffs for the second consecutive season.
The Grizzlies have the skills to become a contender, but they have lacked consistency. Blame it on chemistry or talent or the lack of a big man at center, but you can’t blame Jerry West, a true genius at NBA team management. The Grizzlies believe they have punched their ticket to the playoffs by ridding themselves of problem players, and the city of Memphis is one hundred percent behind them. Grizzlies tickets at the FedEx Forum have never been hotter as fans line up to see if the Grizzlies can return to the NBA Playoffs.
