It’s nearly impossible to deny that San Antonio Spurs tickets are the hottest
tickets in the NBA at the moment. As the 2005 NBA Champions, the Spurs routinely
dominated their opponents with the choking defensive play of Tim Duncan on the
inside and Bruce Bowen along the perimeter. Manu Ginobli’s hard-driving style
was much improved over previous seasons. With the addition of Michael Finley and
Nick Van Exel, this deep team has gotten even deeper. Spurs ticket holders know
that while their team may not be running up the score, they will be dismantling
whatever offense is thrown at them. With three NBA Championships in seven years
under their belts, San Antonio just keeps punching their ticket to success.
Ticket sales of the first incarnation of the Spurs as the American Basketball
Association’ Dallas Chaparalls were less than stellar and in 1972, the team was
moved to San Antonio and renamed. Basketball fans bought their first NBA tickets
in 1976 and saw the Spurs win five division titles in their first seven years in
the NBA, riding the graceful finger-rolls of Hall of Famer George Gervin.
Gervin left the team in 1985, and the Spurs collapsed. In 1987, they drafted
promising center David Robinson, but fans would have to wait until 1989 to buy
tickets to see him play, due to his commitment to the United States Navy. It was
well worth the wait – the Spurs achieved the biggest one-season turnaround in
NBA history and made it all the way to the Western Conference semifinals, where
the Portland Trail Blazers sent them home. Robinson was named NBA MVP in the
1994-95 season.
Tim Duncan was drafted in 1997 and with defensive-minded Robinson, took the
Spurs to their first NBA Championship in 1998-99 under the tutelage of head
coach Gregg Popovich. They up-ended New Jersey in the finals of 2003 for a
second title and established themselves fully as an elite team in the NBA.
Robinson would retire in 2004, but with Tony Parker and Ginobli backing up
Duncan on the court, the Spurs remained unstoppable. Popular wisdom says that
high-powered offenses sell tickets, but the Spurs have another formula to fill
the seats of the Alamo Dome: win, win, and win some more. “Defense wins
championships” is a hallmark quote of the NFL, but San Antonio proves that it
applies to the NBA as well. Spurs ticket holders don’t care how the Spurs do it,
they just want another championship. And there’s no reason why they can’t take
home another title this year.
