Two teams headed in opposite directions will meet on December 27 at Orlando’s
fabled Citrus Bowl Stadium for the 2005 Champs Sports Bowl. The Clemson Tigers
head down to Orlando for the holidays brimming with confidence after knocking
off Steve Spurrier’s hyped-up South Carolina Gamecocks in the regular-season
finale. The Tigers’ bowl opponent is the Colorado Buffalos, whose season
couldn’t have ended in worse fashion. Back-to-back blowout losses, including a
70-3 shellacking at the hands of Vince Young and the Texas Longhorns in the Big
12 Championship Game, were followed by the dismissal of head coach Gary Barnett.
It will be interesting to see how the Buffalos react; especially when Clemson
quarterback Charlie Whitehurst and running back James Davis show up at the
Champs Sports Bowl. Your Champs Sports Bowl tickets are available today.
Tommy Bowden’s Tigers will be trying to erase the memories of their last visit
to the Champs Sports Bowl. The Texas Tech Red Raiders destroyed Clemson 55-15 in
the bowl’s 2002 edition. Whitehurst has rebounded and put together one of his
best seasons of his topsy-turvy career. The senior is completing 67 percent of
his passes and led the Tigers to three straight victories to end the regular
season. Highlighting that strong finish was an impressive 35-14 belting of
eventual ACC champ Florida State, coached by the legendary Bobby Bowden, Tommy’s
father.
While Clemson was closing out the season with a bang, the Buffalos were roaming
the other way. First, Big 12 rivals Iowa State and Nebraska smoked the Buffalos,
seemingly ending Colorado’s chances to win the Big 12’s North Division. But the
Kansas Jayhawks knocked off the Cyclones to open a back door for the Buffalos to
get to the Big 12 Championship Game. Quarterback Joel Klatt and company probably
wished they had made a wrong turn, as the Longhorns handed them the beating of a
lifetime.
Will Colorado come out of its tailspin in time to take on a peeking Clemson
squad? If not, the Tigers could put up some prolific numbers on the scoreboard
at Citrus Bowl Stadium. The last three winners have each scored more than 50
points. Will Clemson make it four in row? Or will the Buffalos rally? Find out
all the answers by picking up your 2005 Champs Sports Bowl tickets right here,
right now.
