All right all you Oregon Duck fans. Quit your quacking and buy Holiday Bowl
tickets. It's no fun to be the latest victim of the BCS, but there are worse
places to spend the holidays than San Diego. Qualcomm Stadium will be the place
to be on Dec. 29, as Oregon tries to prove its case against a young and
improving Oklahoma Sooners team in the 2005 Pacific Life Holiday Bowl.
It's not the BCS payday the 10-1 Ducks were hoping for. That bid went to the
Ohio State Buckeyes and Notre Dame Fighting Irish, a pair of two-loss teams. In
last year's Holiday Bowl, a BCS-shunned California team was shocked by the Big
12's high-flying Texas Tech Red Raiders. Think Oregon head coach Mike Bellotti
has reminded his Ducks about that game?
The Big 12 has won three of the last four Holiday Bowls, including last year's
45-31 Red Raider romp. But Oklahoma will have its hands full trying to repeat
Tech's feat. Bob Stoops' Troops overcame an un-Sooner-like start to reach a bowl
game for the eighth consecutive season, every year since Stoops stepped onto the
campus in Norman, Oklahoma. The 7-4 Sooners will be looking to erase the
memories of their last two meetings with the PAC 10. Entrenched in that poor
start was an embarrassing loss to the UCLA Bruins at the Rose Bowl. And, of
course, there was the 55-19 drubbing the USC Trojans put on OU in last year's
BCS National Championship Game. The memories of the Orange Bowl were still fresh
when the Sooners began the 2005 campaign by losing at home to the TCU Horned
Frogs. A blowout loss to Red River rival Texas, and Oklahoma fans were
questioning whether bowl tickets would be a necessity this year. Yet, with the
return of a healthy Adrian Peterson to the line-up, the Sooners rallied to win
five of six, with the only loss coming on a disputed call at Texas Tech.
Is Oklahoma back to its old self? Will Oregon look disappointed or inspired? Do
the Ducks belong in the BCS? Is the PAC 10 overrated or underrated? Where does
the Big 12 rank? Buy Holiday Bowl tickets and find out all the answers while
enjoying the sunny and warm December climate at San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium.
