It’s the Brigham Young University Cougars and the California Golden Bears
highlighting the Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl in 2005, and fans of the
Mountain West Conference and the Pac 10 are in for a real treat. The Las Vegas
Bowl annually pits two of the better teams from each conference in the showdown
and this year’s pairing is set to provide some fireworks for college football
fans.
The BYU Cougars earned their Las Vegas Bowl tickets with a strong finish in the
Mountain West by winning five of their last seven games, including back-to-back
wins over Wyoming and UNLV, and a 24-14 pasting of Colorado State. The Cougars
rely on the strong arm of quarterback John Beck, who threw for over 3,000 yards
and 24 touchdowns in 2005, and the running of tailback Curtis Brown, who posted
a 1,000 yard season. The Cougars are back in the post-season for the first time
since 2001 and this is their first ever trip to the Las Vegas Bowl.
The Golden Bears finished their season with a 7-4 mark by crushing Stanford
27-3. The Bears rely on a pair of solid running backs in Marshawn Lynch and
Justin Forsett. Lynch topped the 1,000 yard mark on 172 carries and scored seven
touchdowns for California, while Forsett is breathing down his teammates neck
with 962 yards on 124 carries and six TD’s. The Bears turned to Steve Levy at
quarterback for their contest at Stanford. He responded with a steady
performance by completing10 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown. California has
come out on top in its two previous games with the Cougars, but this will be the
first time in the Las Vegas Bowl for either team.
Mark your calendar for December 22, 2005. The Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl
in Sam Boyd Stadium is sure to be one of the best college bowl games of the
year. The Golden Bears come from the tough PAC 10 and know how to win the big
game. BYU has a great combination at quarterback and running back that creates
real headaches for opposing defenses. If you’re headed for Vegas, the 2005 Las
Vegas Bowl is a sure bet for exciting college football action.
