Give me Liberty Bowl tickets, or give me an offensive shootout featuring two
upstart teams trying to make a name for their self. The Fresno State Bulldogs
have garnered national praise for their willingness to play anyone, anywhere at
anytime. Pat Hill's Bulldogs put a mighty scare into the USC Trojans, before
suffering back-to-back upset losses to end the season. The Tulsa Golden
Hurricane didn't waste anytime making itself at home in Conference USA. Head
coach Steve Kragthorpe's Hurricane rained on Central Florida's parade in the
CUSA Championship Game to earn a berth in the storied Liberty Bowl.
The two rising programs will meet at noon on New Year's Eve at the 2005 Liberty
Bowl. Don't worry the celebration on Memphis' popular Beat Street won't kick
into full gear until after the Hurricane and Bulldogs finish lighting up the
scoreboard at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.
Tulsa can score points in bunches. Led by sly quarterback Paul Smith, a threat
on the ground and through the air, the Hurricane blew past defenses to the tune
of 34 points a game. Excuse Fresno State if they're not overly impressed,
though.
The Bulldogs can score with the best of them. Just ask Pete Carroll's Trojans.
Fresno State dropped 42 on USC and enters the Liberty Bowl averaging more than
39 points per game. Quarterback Paul Pinegar has experienced a breakout senior
season, throwing for more than 3,000 yards and 29 touchdowns.
Only a sophomore, Smith has emerged into a steady leader of the Tulsa offense.
He threw for more than 2,600 yards and 19 touchdowns. In an important 34-17 win
at Southern Miss, Smith ran for three touchdowns and threw for another. His main
target is tight end Garrett Mills. The lanky Mills has knack at finding open
space in the secondary. He caught 83 passes for 1,183 yards and nine touchdowns.
The Liberty Bowl victory would be another step in the right direction for these
up-and-coming programs. Hill has taken the Bulldogs to new heights, and
Kragthorpe's following the same path in Tulsa. Find out which team grabs some
