The Music City Bowl gets better every year. In 2004, 66,000 fans with Music City
Bowl tickets packed into The Coliseum in Nashville, Tennessee to watch the
Minnesota Golden Gophers squeak past Alabama 20-16. The Golden Gophers return to
represent the Big 10 in a December 30, 2005 contest with the Virginia Cavaliers
from the Atlantic Coast Conference. What makes the 2005 Music City Bowl special
is the cast of top quality players who’ll butt heads on the floor of The
Coliseum.
Minnesota brings the #2 rushing attack in the nation. Averaging almost 280 yards
per game, the Gophers line up with All-American center Greg Eslinger and then
hand the ball off to running backs Laurence Maroney and Gary Russell. Maroney
led the Big 10 with 135 yards per game in 2005, while Russell notched 1,064
yards and an incredible 18 touchdowns. Balanced out by quarterback Bryan
Cupito’s 2,267 passing yards and 15 touchdowns, Minnesota presents an almost
unstoppable scoring machine for any opponent. 2005 marks the Gophers 3rd trip to
the Music City Bowl, with winning trips in 2002 and 2004.
The Virginia Cavaliers have the weapons to slow them down in linebackers Kai
Parham and Ahmad Brooks. Parham led the Cavaliers with 89 tackles and 8.5 sacks
during the season. Offensively, Virginia is led by quarterback Marques Hagans.
Hagans connected 188 times on the season for 2,134 yards and a dozen TD’s, while
rushing for 284 yards, 3rd on the team. His favorite target is wide receiver
Deyon Williams, who led all receivers with 52 catches and 6 touchdowns. When the
Cavaliers run they like to hand the ball off to Wali Lundy. Lundy led the team
in rushing with 515 yards and eight scores.
The 2005 Music City Bowl is the only postseason game between the Big 10 and the
ACC. The Gophers are going to their fourth straight bowl appearance. This is the
Cavaliers first berth in the Music City Bowl. Nashville and Music City Bowl
tickets are a great combination for the holidays. 60,000 college football fans
can’t be wrong, so pack your guitar, practice your twang, and head for The
Coliseum in Nashville for the 2005 Music City Bowl.
