2007 Outback Bowl Preview
The Penn State Nittany Lions carry an 8-4 regular season record into the Outback
Bowl. Penn State finished 5-3 in the Big 10 with wins over Northwestern,
Minnesota, Illinois, and Purdue. Penn State played well throughout the season,
suffering very narrow losses to Michigan (#4) and Wisconsin, and walloped their
in-state rival Michigan State 17-13 to end the season. As always, the Nittany
Lions dished out a strong running game. Senior Tony Hunt ran for 1,228 yards,
topping the 100-yard mark seven times during the season and scoring 11
touchdowns. But the Nittany Lions are also balanced. Quarterback Anthony Morelli
connected on eight touchdown passes to seven different receivers on his way to
2,227 yards.
The Tennessee Volunteers had to fight their way to a spot in the Outback Bowl in
the SEC. The Volunteers finished 9-3 overall and 5-3 in the conference. Wins
over the Alabama Crimson Tide, Georgia Bulldogs, Vanderbilt, and Kentucky helped
put together a solid season for Tennessee. In Knoxville, the aerial attack plays
a more significant role. Quarterback Erik Ainge threw for almost 3,000 yards and
led the Volunteers with 19 touchdowns in 2007. Eleven of those scoring passes
went to wide receiver Robert Meachem, who’s 1,265 receiving yards led Tennessee
on the year.

Past Outback Bowl ticket info
Historically, Outback Bowl tickets have delivered the goods. Exciting finishes
to tightly contested games have been the norm around New Year's Day at Tampa
Bay's Raymond James Stadium. Last year, Georgia, led by college football's
all-time winningest quarterback David Greene, nipped the Wisconsin Badgers
24-21. The Big Ten and SEC will be at it again in 2006, as the Florida Gators
and Iowa Hawkeyes meet at 10 a.m. Tampa-time on January 2 in one of the best
match-ups of the bowl season. Florida head coach Urban Meyer persevered through
a roller coaster ride in his first year in the SEC. The Gators won their first
four games and shot up the polls. But road losses at Alabama and at LSU tempered
the expectations. The biggest low in Florida's season, however, would come in a
November showdown at South Carolina and the Gamecocks' new head coach, Steve
Spurrier. A Gator legend of the past, Spurrier orchestrated one of the most
memorable upsets of the season by leading the Gamecocks past his former team.
Florida's low point was followed directly by its high point. In their most
impressive performance of the season, the Gators dominated rival Florida State,
34-7, to secure their berth in the Outback Bowl. Iowa had a similar bumpy road
to Raymond James Stadium. A lot was expected of the Hawkeyes, after last year's
thrilling victory over Nick Saban's LSU Tigers in the Capital One Bowl. BCS Bowl
tickets were on the minds of most Hawkeye fans as the season began. But a
stunning 23-3 loss at Iowa State in the second week of the season erased those
dreams. In typical Iowa fashion, head coach Kurt Ferentz kept the ship pointed
in the right direction. Led by quarterback Drew Tate, the Hawkeyes closed the
season with big wins at Wisconsin and over Minnesota to earn their Outback Bowl
tickets. The Gators and Hawkeyes also squared off in the 2004 Outback Bowl,
something Florida fans would like forget. Iowa rolled over Ron Zook and the
Gators 37-17. Florida also lost in the 2003 Outback Bowl. But these are Meyer's
Gators now. They're still stinging from that loss to the Old Ball Coach's
Gamecocks and will be looking take out a little frustration on Ferentz' Hawkeyes.
It won't be easy, though. Iowa also finished with a bang and will be looking for
its second Outback Bowl championship. Which rising program ends its season on a
high note? Find out on January 2, at Tampa's Raymond James Stadium, where the
New Year's celebration will be rocking. Your invitation to the party is buying
