The U.S. Open, with its traditional evil layout, is the sternest test in
golf. Historic Winged Foot Golf Club unquestionably will continue that tradition
this June. Tight, tree-lined fairways will force even the world’s best golfers –
amateurs and pros – to have pinpoint accuracy and plenty of length off the tee
box. The few players lucky enough to find the skinny, hard fairways will simply
need to drop a 3-iron or so on tiny, well-guarded greens. Things get tough from
there. The greens are elevated, slick and sloped, transforming the “gimme”
3-footer into a hope-and-prayer. It’s what they call U.S. Open conditions, where
even the world’s best would be happy with even par, last year’s winning score.
In the 2005 U.S. Open, New Zealander Michael Campbell held off Tiger Woods’
normal Sunday charger to win his first major championship at Pinehurst Country
Club. Trailing Retief Goosen by four strokes heading into the final round,
Campbell fired a 1-over-parm benefited from Goosen’s meltdown emerged as the
leader. But, as usual, Tiger was lurking, just a few shots back. Pinehurst was
brutalizing the best players in the world, and Campbell had not often
experienced major tournament pressure. What pressure? Campbell hung tough,
holding off Woods by two shots to win his first major title.
After failing to catch Campbell last year, you can bet Woods will be geared up
for a run at his third U.S. Open Championship. But he’ll have plenty of
competition. Vijay Singh has stared down Woods on numerous occasions. Phil
Mickelson followed his first major at the 2004 Masters by winning last year’s
PGA
Championship. Mickelson finished second to Goosen at the 2004 U.S. Open.
Ernie Els and Sergio Garcia will also make some noise at Winged Foot. And don’t
forget about Campbell. He’s proven he can play with the big boys and handle the
maximum amount of pressure.
The 106th U.S. Open tees off on June 15 at Winged Food Country Club. Dramatic
storylines and historic performances are practically guaranteed at America’s
championship. The world’s biggest stars will be battling some of the toughest
conditions of the year. Will Tiger rule? Or this Vijay’s year? Don’t count out
Lefty, either. For you chance to see the drama unfold in person, let
