Preakness stakes info and history

The Preakness stakes began at Pimlico racetrack in 1873 and has continued to be the 2nd prestigious race in Horse Racing's triple crown. Nestled in between the Kentucky Derby and The Summer's Belmont Stakes, the Preakness always occurs on the 3rd Saturday in May in Baltimore, MD.  The race usually includes the winner of the Kentucky Derby battling other 3 year old horses in a 1 and 3/16th mile course (the shortest of the triple crown, the Belmont is the longest). The Preakness is nicknamed The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans because a horseshoe of black-eyed susan flowers (Rudbeckia hirta) is placed around the winner of the race. The actual name Preakness came from the winner of the Dinner Party stakes in 1873, "Preakness" of the Preakness stables in Wayne, New Jersey. Although started in Maryland, the race actually was moved to the Bronx, NY in 1890 and ran there until 1903 before returning to Baltimore. The first televised race was on CBS in 1948. A Preakness tradition is to paint the colors of the winning horse of the year's on the weather vane on top of the infield structure. Like the Kentucky Oaks, the race the day before, The Black Eyed Susan also draws attention to up and coming horses and the winning jockey also receives the horseshoe of Black Eyed Susans.
