The Beacon theatre is one of the oldest concert halls in North America.Constructed in 1928, the theatre started as a vaudeville hall. When movie houses started becoming popular during the 1940-50's the hall was convertedto an enormous movie mecca. In 1986, The Beacon was renovated and turned into a first class concert venue in 1986. Up until 86', it was one of New York City's top movie houses with many movie premiers in the 1960's and 70's. One of the reasons the theatre was converted into a concert hall was because of it's perfect sound acoustics. One reason for this is that in the early days of theatre, without amplification vaudville rooms had to have great acoustics.
The theatre still maintains an old fashioned theatre design partly due to its national recognition as an Art-Deco landmark. This recognition protects the Beacon from any alteration or destruction. Any work that is done on the outside or inside has has to contain the integrity of the original design. The design includes an open-air marble lobby trimmed in gold, which is entered into through the building’s original bronze doors.  The lobby opens up to a set of stairs that lead to two large landings that open to either of two balconies. The landings provide plenty of room for fans to congregate in between sets. Both balconies provide a great look at the stage that is flanked by two large 30-foot tall statues of Greek goddesses. The orchestra seating at the Beacon starts with double letters first i.e. AA-FF and even though the sound is spectacular from even the balconies, the closer you are to the stage the better the overall concert experience will be. Some of complained about the non-roominess of the seats at the Beacon, most likely because of it's early construction but many are still in awe of it's appearance and the great live concert sounds and traditional design make it a great place to see your favorite concert act while in New York city.
