Fall Shows Worth the Drive: Jim Thorpe and Allentown

Two of Pennsylvania’s best rooms have a packed fall calendar.

Some of the best live music in Pennsylvania doesn't happen in arenas. It happens in smaller rooms, where you can see the musicians' faces, hear every note clearly and feel like part of the show instead of a face in a crowd of thousands. This fall, two of the region's best rooms - the Mauch Chunk Opera House in Jim Thorpe and the Arrow at Archer Music Hall in Allentown - have calendars worth making the drive for. Here's what's coming up and how to make a night of it.

Mauch Chunk Opera House, Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe is one of the prettiest small towns in Pennsylvania. Tucked into the mountains along the Lehigh River, it's often called the "Switzerland of America," with Victorian architecture, winding streets and a downtown full of shops, restaurants and cafes. The Mauch Chunk Opera House sits right in the middle of it all - a historic theater that has become one of the favorite stops in the region for touring musicians and tribute acts.

The fall lineup is a strong one:

Back in Black - The True AC/DC Experience (Saturday, November 7). If you've ever wanted to hear "Highway to Hell," "Thunderstruck" and "You Shook Me All Night Long" played loud in an intimate room, this is your night. Tribute shows like this one are all about the energy, and a small theater puts you right in the middle of it.

John Nemeth (Friday, November 13). John Nemeth is a soul and blues singer and harmonica player with a big voice and a deep catalog. If you love classic soul and blues played by musicians who clearly love it too, this is a show to circle on your calendar.

The 'The Band' Band - Last Waltz Celebration (Saturday, November 14). The Last Waltz is one of the most famous farewell concerts in rock history, and this show celebrates The Band and the songs that made that night legendary. It's a great pick for longtime fans and for anyone who grew up hearing those songs at home.

Make a day of it in Jim Thorpe

The best way to see a show at the Mauch Chunk Opera House is to turn it into a full day trip. Come up early and walk the downtown, browse the shops and grab dinner at one of the many restaurants within walking distance of the theater. In the fall, the surrounding mountains are full of color, and the area is known for hiking, biking and scenic train rides. Parking downtown can fill up on busy weekends, so plan to arrive with time to spare.

Small rooms, big nights.

Arrow at Archer Music Hall, Allentown

Allentown's Archer Music Hall is one of the newest venues in the Lehigh Valley, and the Arrow room brings touring acts up close in a more intimate setting. It's a great place to catch artists on the rise before they move on to bigger stages, and to see established bands in a room where you can actually connect with the music.

Coming up at the Arrow:

Deer Tick (Friday, November 20). The rock band out of Rhode Island is known for raucous, rootsy live shows that swing between barroom rock and heartfelt songwriting. Their fans are loyal, and their shows have a reputation for being a lot of fun.

Daisy Grenade (Thursday, December 10). A mid-week show is a great excuse for a night out during the busy holiday season - and an intimate room is the perfect place to discover a band you'll be telling your friends about.

Ekoh (Saturday, January 16, 2027). Kick off the new year with a Saturday night show. If you're already a fan, you know how much a smaller room changes the experience.

Small rooms sell out fast

The reason small venues are so special is the same reason they sell out quickly: there just aren't that many seats. When a show you love is announced, don't wait too long. If the show has already sold out, that doesn't necessarily mean you're out of luck - resale tickets often become available as fans' plans change, and that's where a broker can help.

Tips for a great night at a small venue

Arrive early. Smaller rooms often have general admission areas or limited seating, and getting there early gives you the best choice of spots. Check the venue's bag and entry policies before you go. Bring your mobile tickets ready on your phone, fully charged. And plan your ride home ahead of time, especially if you're driving back from the mountains after dark.

Looking ahead

If you're already planning next year, country star Bailey Zimmerman is scheduled to play the Bloomsburg Fair on Friday, September 24, 2027 - another great Pennsylvania night out to put on the calendar.
